As a longtime Reiki Practitioner, I know the important role intent plays in healing. In order for us to begin a session, we pray, concentrate on the energy in our space, use Reiki symbols to call in energy, or just think “Reiki.” We scan out patients bodies for blocked energy, we “read” the aura, and we apply energy to those places that need it, all by our thoughts and our hands. When doing distance work, we visualize the person, and work with them in the same way. Whether we view it as spiritual healing, energy medicine or intentional mental effort, this approach to illness implies a belief that the energy emanating off a human body plays a direct role in healing. As practitioners, we work with this energy, and act as conduits for healing.
What exactly is intention, and how do we use it? How important is it, when we all know that Reiki heals at it’s own pace and in it’s own way, and is individual to each patient in how this works. I don’t think I or anyone else can explain what is exactly going on, but I do find that when I use intentionality in conjunction with Reiki healing, I get into the flow of healing easier, I can hear what my patients need, and I feel the energy move differently. My intuition is more keen and I sense more of what to ask, and where to apply healing.
Intention is prayer, visualization, clear statements of intent (such as a personal mission statement of how you wish to be as a healer), personal ethics statements, monthly intentions about your practice, magic and spells, working with ancestors and the spirit world, chanting, the music you use, aromas and air quality, you get the picture. All of these things are how intent works. When A shaman does a healing journey, she intends to go through the different worlds to retrieve knowledge and healing gifts for her client. She intends to create a safe and sacred space for healing. All of these things play an important role in the construction of your practice.
As an example, use the energy of the new moon for creating a vision of your practice. I post the new moon energies on my intuitive earth blog – http://intuitiveearth.wordpress.com/ This month, March, we have new moon in Aries today at 12:06 pm. Aries is a perfect time for new beginnings, so use this energy to set out what you want to accomplish with your practice this year. Whether it’s using Reiki with your family, at work or making it into a practice, set your intention for what new you will create with Reiki, and how you want to work with it. You’ll be surprised by how this can help you bring more healing energies into your life.
